Make-Up Work for Progress Reports: April 10 One AR test for Progress Reports: April 11 Islam Test: April 11 Progress Reports: April 12 Easter Break: April 14-21 EOG's: May 18 and 19 Week of April 10-14, 2017: From now until the EOG's, homework will be different. M-Th, students will need to read for 30 minutes and compose a 5 sentence summary of what they have read. We are working on building up comprehension and stamina. Above is a copy of the summary sheet that I am sending home with the students. Please make sure you follow the directions. Students also have the opportunity to do extra credit. Please read the directions for additional information. Poetry practice, for this week only, is Poem #5 (Sleep) which was due Tuesday and Poem #7 (A Lady) is due on Wednesday. In Social Studies, We are working on an introduction to Ancient China through a Webquest. I have posted the link in Google Classroom, SS and every student has received a packet in class. I am hoping that students will make good choices and stay focused to get this done by Thursday. However, in case more time is needed, it is officially due on Monday, April 24 when we get back. Please have a safe and fun-filled Easter Break and be prepared to work hard when we get back as we make final preparations for the EOG's. Week of April 3-7, 2017 We are in the final days before EOG's and the format of the class will shift towards reviewing for our assessments. This will mean Homework will change--NO MORE VOCAB/SPELLING WORDS!!! This week and next, I will be sending home poetry to be read and questions to be answered. When we come back from Easter Break, we will be shifting into daily reading and summaries. More of that later. For this week, students had "The Grave" due on Thursday. For Friday, "The Dawn's Awake". Week of March 13-17, 2017: This will be a short week but a busy one. We have a lot of sickness going around due to a stomach virus and the flu. Although we had busing issues, the kids were great with handling the delays and represented ACS in a stellar way at the attractions. I am very proud of them! A special thank you to all the chaperones who accompanied us on our Medieval Times trip. Your efforts were greatly appreciated. We have one final fundraising activity coming up on Feb. 28 to help raise the funds for our end-of-year celebration at Camp Caroline. A flyer will be going home this week inviting you to come dine with us at Chipolte in New Bern. If you bring the flyer with you and turn it in, the seventh grade class we receive 50% of the bill as a donation!!! Please come out, enjoy a great meal, and support the seventh grade class! ELA:
Social Studies Due Dates: We will be finishing up our study of the Explorer's this week. The final draft of the Explorer's research essay is Tuesday, Feb. 21. We will be working in stations and completing an overview of all the explorers with a test on Monday, Feb. 27. Week of Feb. 13-17, 2017 A warm Thank You to all the parents, family, and students who have worked so hard to support our fundraisers this school year. WE HAVE PAID OFF THE BUS!!! We will complete our latest fundraiser on Monday with the Valentines's Day bracelet sale. A special thanks to my morning helpers of Morgan and Emily who have faithfully sold in the mornings. Future fundraising will go to our Camp Caroline fund, a field trip we are planning on doing as our end-of-year celebration. Since this is the week we will be going to Medieval Times, there will be NO Spelling/Vocabulary this week. We will finish our study of Persuasive Language, focusing on speeches, and completing the rough and final draft of the Explorer's Essay. Final drafts of the essays will be due on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The official permission slip for Medieval Times/Ripley's Aquarium is going home on Monday. These must be signed and returned before we go on the trip. Please remember that we will be leaving promptly at 7:00 am on Thursday and will return 7-8 pm Thursday night. We will call you when we are leaving Jacksonville so that you have time to plan your pick-up. Please be prompt--we will all be exhausted! Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Week of Jan. 30-Feb. 3, 2017 We continue to work on fundraisers. The Raffle Ticket was a HUGE success with almost $500 being raised. Thank you for all those who participated by selling the tickets. The top three sellers were Emma, Ramon, and Nathan. Our next fundraiser will be selling Valentine's Day bracelets to the school. We need all of the participation in the fundraisers as we can get! Social Studies Due Dates We are currently working on our first research-based writing assignment. A lot of modeling is going on with students working on their topics independently. For this week, the introductory paragraph will be due on Wednesday (1-31-17). All three body paragraphs will be due next week. Week of January 23-27, 2017 We are still working on fundraisers. With the Raffle Tickets alone, we have made almost $200. Thank you for the 8 that have so far participated. Right now, Ramon is in the lead with 50, Emma in second with 40, and a tie for third with Edwin and Maddie. I encourage all students to do their part--please sell as many as you can. The bus costs almost $2300. So far we have raised about around $700. We need all of the participation in the fundraisers as we can get! ELA:

The final cost of the trip surprised me when the bus cost came in almost $300 dollars over from last year. Because of the high cost of this trip, we will be working very hard to raise the funds to keep the trip at $50 per students. The information letter about the trip was sent home and a copy is attached above. We will continue to do various fundraisers to pay off this trip and all extra money will go to Medieval Times field trip and our end of year celebration to Camp Caroline (more information to follow). Please support our efforts as much as possible. This will be a short week with Monday a day off to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Because of this, last week's WRL is due on Tuesday, 5 days required. The new WRL will be due Monday, Jan. 23 but only 4 days are required. For this week in Spelling/Vocabulary students will only be responsible for the first 15 words. The rest is as usual. ELA:

I hope everyone had a restful Christmas vacation and is now ready to finish the year off in a positive way. For Monday, Jan. 9, don't forget that the Exploring New Worlds packet is due. Social Studies Due Dates: Renaissnce Test: Monday, Dec. 12. They need to study from their Study Guide in order to be ready. Week of December 5-9, 2016 Great News! We raised $710.00 from our first fundraiser last Friday! Thank you for all of those who sent in snacks and helped to chaperone the event. Your efforts helped to make this an event that all the children enjoyed. We will be having the 6-12 fundraiser this Friday, Dec. 9. We are set with drinks, chips, and cakes. The kids have asked to serve hotdogs, so if you would like to donate hotdogs and rolls, that would be great. I am also collecting donations for pizza. Last week, the pizza's were donated but we will need to purchase this week's pizza. If you can help out, please put the money in an envelope marked for "pizza" and I will make sure it gets there! Social Studies Due Dates: We will be reviewing all of this week for our Renaissnce Test. The children voted and decided to take the test on Monday, Dec. 12. They need to study from their Study Guide in order to be ready. A copy of the webquest can be found above, in the second column. Week of November 28-December 2, 2016 What a wonderful Thanksgiving break! I hope all of you had an opportunity to enjoy "quality time" with your family and friends, thankful for the time you had together, as well as a successful Black Friday shopping adventures! We are on the last push for the second marking period. The last day to take AR tests will be Tuesday, Dec. 20. The last day to turn in make-up work will be on Friday, Dec. 16. There will be NO exceptions for these due dates, so please plan ahead in order to achieve success. ELA:

Due to the shortness of this week with Thanksgiving Break, there will be NO spelling/vocab. We will be taking a rather lengthy Fiction test and will be working on Brain Pops on famous Renaissance people. There will not be an assigned Weekly Reading Log (WRL) due for next Monday, but it can be done for extra credit. Week of November 14-18, 2016 I hope you have an enjoyable Veteran's Day weekend. With Thanksgiving around the corner and Christmas Break following soon after, these next few weeks will be busy ones. Use your time wisely, plan ahead, and you will have a successful marking period! Monday, November 14 there are two projects that are due. In ELA, the Biography Project and in SS, the Middle Ages project. More information for both can be found in Google Classroom. Please turn in all eletronic projects through Google Classroom. Progress reports will be issued on November 22, just before Thanksgiving break. In order to prepare for this, I will need all make-up work from the first part of the second marking period by Friday, Nov. 18. After this date, the missing work from this time period cannot be made up. Students also need to have taken 2 AR tests for this Progress Report. The last day to take AR test for the Progress Report is Monday, Nov. 21.
Week of November 7-11, 2016 This will be a short week with having a half day on Thursday, Nov. 10 and a full day off on Friday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veteran's Day. Because of this, I will NOT be assigning a Spelling/Vocabulary list. Rather, students will be working on a Biography Assignment which will be due on Monday, Nov. 14. Information about this project will be found in Google Classroom on Monday. Students may work on this project at home in order to have it complete on time. Students will be working on this in class as well. In Social Studies, we will be finishing up our unit of study on the Middle Ages. Monday and Tuesday we will be reviewing with the test on Wednesday. This will NOT be open notes and I am expecting students to study and pay attention during our classroom reviews. Don't forget that the Social Studies Project is due on Monday, November 14 as well. I am expecting to see neat work, detailed facts in the student's own words, and clear/colorful graphics. Many of the projects can be done online with no hard copy work, outside of the research. Please take the opportunity to thank Veterans for their service to our country. Week #11: October 31-November 4 Seems like it has been awhile, but next week will be a full week for all. Progress Reports will be issued Nov. 22. By this time, each child should have taken at least 2 AR tests, within the parameters set up at the beginning of the year. Our School Board Meeting will be on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 6:00. Come out and see what is happening with our new school plans and how we are progressing. Week #9: October 17-21, 2016 Good Evening! This sure has been a beautiful end for a hectic week. Today was the last day of the first Marking Period. I will be working on the final grades for this quarter and should be done by Tuesday, if all goes well. Grades collected this week will be on Powerschool shortly under the Second Marking Period. Next week will be a busy one. We will have Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 21, 2016. More information will be posted on the school website. The seventh grade will have a vehicle to share treats with the children and donations of individually wrapped candies would be greatly appreciated. I will also need a few kids to help me to run the station. Please let me know if you can help out. Also, we have made tentative plans to have 2 after school activities to raise money for our big Medieval Times field trip in February. I will be contacting those of you who have signed up to help. Many hands make light work! Report Cards will be issued on Friday, Oct. 21. Please contact me if you have any questions. If they are signed and returned on Monday they will receive extra credit. Week #8: October 3-7, 2016 Good evening! I hope that your Friday was a good one. There are a lot of local activities going on and a beautiful weekend is in the forecast. I hope you have a great one! For next week, we will be in the final stages of Marking Period number 1. The last day to turn in any make-up work is fast approaching--all work needs to be turned in by Tuesday, October 11--NO EXCEPTIONS!!! The end of MP 1 and the last day to take AR tests will be October 14. I will only take the three highest averages of books worth one point or more and are in the student's reading range. Any book not meeting this criteria will not count. Monday, October 10, is a day off for students. Homework: This week is identified as Week #8.
Week #7: September 26-30, 2016 I hope the confusion was cleared out from last week. On Friday, I was not at school so that I could attend an out-of-state family wedding. The hotel did not have strong enough service in order for me to get into this site. I was able to get into Google Classroom and posted the notice there. In the future, if you do not see a posting for the week here, please ask your child to open Google Classroom, ELA, and hopefully there will be a post. September 30, Friday, is a half day for students. Dismissal will be 11:30. The end of the marking period is fast approaching. October 14 will be the last day for students to take AR tests. By this date, students need to have tested on at least 3 books within their range and are worth at least 1 point. I will take the three highest grades that meet this criteria. The last day to turn in make-up work for the second part of this marking period will be Tuesday, Oct. 11. There will be no school for staff and students on October 10. Homework: This week is identified as Week #7.
Week#5: September 12-16, 2016 This has been a short week, but a busy one! Monday will be the last day to turn in any missing work from the first four weeks of school. These are grades that appear as a "0" in Powerschool. NO EXCEPTIONS!! Work from this time frame will no longer be accepted beyond Monday. On September 15, 2016, we will have an Open House from 5:30-7:00. Progress Reports will be dispersed at this time. If you are unable to attend, the Progress Reports will be given out on Friday. Don't be surprised for what Progress Reports bring! If you have not been able to sign up for Parent updates from Powerschool, please do so ASAP. If you need any information, please let me know. In the packet you received at the beginning of the school year, you had a letter giving information on how to create a Parent login so that you can monitor your child's progress. Please use that information to create an account so that there are no surprises throughout the year. Please contact me if you have any questions or are having difficulty. Progress Reports will be issued on Wednesday, September 14. Also, under the Resources Tab is a link to a free online typing program. This can be very helpful for students to use to increase typing speed and fluency. Homework: Finally we have caught up! Because there will only be 4 days of school next week, we only have 15 words. Week #3: August 29-September 2, 2016 Another great week with a lot of effort on the part of your children. Ask them about the story we read called "Thank You, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes. Photos for the Yearbook will be taken on September 8, 2016. CandyMan Orders are due September 7, 2016. Signed Internet Usage and Student Handbook form is due ASAP. Week #2: August 22-26, 2016 What a busy first week we have had! We had a great start and am looking forward to a great school year!
